Culver’s Restaurant History
Culver’s Restaurant was founded by George Culver in 1984. He had been operating an A&W franchise location at the time and decided that it was time for a change. The reason the name has an apostrophe is because the full name is “Culver’s Frozen Custard and ButterBurgers“, although recently it seems to have been adapted to “Culver’s Restaurant“.
The first location was in the state of Wisconsin. Within 3 years it had proved popular enough to attract attention from other restauranteurs who were looking to license the name. George and his business partners agreed and before long he was franchising the chain on a wider scale.
In 1993, they had just 14 locations, all of which were in Southern Wisconsin. They opened their first restaurant in Minnesota, and within a few years they had spread to several other states in the Midwest. Throughout the 1990’s the brand continued to spread across the Midwest, before looking further afield into the 2000s.
To date, all Culver’s locations are in the United States and they are steadily expanding into more towns, cities and states. There is currently no talk of international expansion, but there would certainly be plenty if interest in they did. Burger chains like Five Guys have done very well around the world, as have chains selling sweet treats like Krispy Kreme, Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins.
Culver’s are famous for a few things that you just won’t find anywhere else. It is a mix of frozen treats and other sweet desserts and American burgers. In many ways, it is like a classic American diner, but with a fast-food feel.
The things that have established the Culver’s menu as one of the best out there include:
- ButterBurgers: The ButterBurger uses fresh beef that has never been frozen. This is seared and then topped with American cheese. It is placed inside a buttered and lightly toasted bun, which is where this menu item gets its name. The beef and the cheese are both sourced from Wisconsin, the state of this chain’s birth.
- Frozen Custard: The frozen custard is a great alternative to ice cream and frozen yoghurt. It is made fresh, much like the Cold Stone Creamery, and you can top it with all kinds of treats, just like the Dairy Queen menu. Also like the aforementioned menu, there are plenty of other treats to enjoy.
There are also dinners, snacks, sided and more on the Culver’s menu. It is one of the most unique and diverse menus we have covered here on Secret Menus. From a site that has hundreds of menus, that’s saying something.

There are over 600 Culver’s locations across the United States. They are primarily focused on the Midwestern United States, but they have been growing across the contiguous US as well. In fact, the rate of growth is about 40 restaurants per year, which is quite impressive. It’s someway short of many rivals that are opening hundreds of new restaurants every year, but in such a saturated and competitive marketplace, it is still impressive.
After all, brands like Quiznos are struggling so much that they are actually going backwards in terms of total locations. The fact that Culver’s is on the up is something to be commended and is proof that this is a brand the customers want.
