Since 1986 in the Washington, D.C. area, Five Guys Burgers and Fries has been serving up delicious custom-made fast food that is a taste powerhouse. From their signature burgers, to their homemade Idaho potato based fries, you can’t beat the fresh flavor. This isn’t your ordinary burger place.
When you place your order, you can even grab a paper basket of shell-on peanuts to munch on while you wait for your food to be ready. The peanuts are placed in big barrels in the center of each restaurant. This is a terrific strategy to have in place, since some of the more popular locations can get quite busy with long lines forming out the door. The reason customers keep coming back is that Five Guys is just consistently good, with fresh, never-frozen food.
Plus, if you aren’t a burger person, you can easily order a hot dog, or for vegetarians a custom made grilled cheese. They have a wide variety of toppings for any of their orders. Even though they started in our country’s capital, they quickly expanded to have 1000 locations around the United States, with an estimated 1500 more in the works.
History Of Five Guys
Although the first Five Guys Burgers and Fries restaurant popped up in D.C., specifically in Arlington, Virginia, it wasn’t long before they expanded. Their founders, Jerry and Jane Murrell started the business so they would have something to pass on to their four young sons. It began as a strictly carry-out burger place only before they transitioned to counter service with eat-in tables.
Their fresh burgers and real cut french fries, fried in 100 percent peanut oil, quickly became a local favorite. They added four other restaurants around the area, and had a fifth son before they branched into franchising the brand they built in 2003. Then it turned into one of the hottest franchises in the country recognized by Forbes Magazine. 300 locations quickly jumped into the fast food fray to become a much loved burger joint around the United States. Currently, they are in 47 states, and even have six locations in Canada.
One of their founding philosophies is that nothing on-site is frozen. Everything they have to offer is freshly made, so there aren’t any freezers to be found at any of the Five Guys locations.
Sticking to how they started
The concept of Five Guys Burgers and Fries hasn’t changed much since its inception. On the menu you can order a hamburger, cheeseburger, and either one with bacon as well. If you want a smaller version of those sandwiches, you can order that. It’s just called their “Little” versions, which is actually just a single burger patty instead of a double. For a standard burger, the prices range from $4-7.50. Then it’s totally up to you how many of their free toppings you want to add to your order. The list of toppings looks like this:
- All the Way
- Jalapeno Peppers
- Green Peppers
- A.1.(R) Steak Sauce
- BBQ Sauce
- Grilled Onions
- Hot Sauce
- Grilled Mushrooms
- Grilled Jalapenos
- Grilled Green Peppers
- Add Extra Patty (+ $2.00)
All things being equal, it’s pretty exciting that a burger place offers free toppings that are unlimited. Most restaurants tend to charge you extra for toppings. Or at the very least only offer a couple free of charge. That’s what makes Five Guys such a great deal, if you choose to load up on their toppings.
For a side of fries, they come in “Regular” or “Cajun” flavor in your choice of “Little,” “Regular,” or “Large” for $2-5 bucks. Go for the large if you are smart, since you can’t beat the price for fresh cut fries.
Other menu items include hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, and even a BLT for those non-burger lovers out there. You get the same deal on those choices with any toppings you want as you have on a sandwich. So even picky folks, children and vegetarians can saddle up for a great meal at Five Guys.
Plus, what meal would be complete without a drink or a shake? Five Guys knows this and offers fountain beverages for $2-3. Their shakes are actually quite good at around $4 for a variety of different flavors. Choose regular flavors like Chocolate, Strawberry, or Vanilla. Or if you want to get really nutty they will add in mix-in flavors such as Oreo, Salted Caramel, and even Coffee.
While Five Guys doesn’t currently offer a happy hour, they do claim to have 250,000 different ways to order one of their burgers! It is a perfect place to have a fun, casual dining experience, either for a unique twist on the traditional after-work happy hour or a family dinner when you aren’t in the mood to cook.
