Every September 18th Americans celebrate their beloved burger with National Cheeseburger Day. It may sound like a strange statement, but the burger has helped to build this country. And without that reach, the GDP of this country would be decidedly weaker.
Burgers have helped to fuel the people of this country. It has helped to give billions of people jobs over the years and it has provided a source of cheap, tasty food for those who would otherwise struggle to afford the luxury of eating out.
So, this is more than just a day to celebrate a simple, fatty foodstuff. It is a day to celebrate America. A day to celebrate the brands that have built this country and the brands we love. Who Invented the Cheeseburger?
A cheeseburger just seems like one of those things that has been around forever. After all, how long could it have possibly taken for someone to realize that burgers go great with cheese? I mean, what doesn’t go great with cheese?
It wasn’t until the 1960s that the Bacon Burger was created, which means White Castle and A&W (who are credited with its invention) had been around for nearly 40 years before someone thought of slipping some bacon between those buns. It didn’t take quite as long for the cheeseburger to be invented though.
There are actually many stories about its invention. One claims that it was invented as far back as 1920 and that it was just a happy accident. Lionel Sternberger made this claim, saying that he had first created the cheeseburger when he was 16 and working in his father’s restaurant.
Other claimed invention stories also come from the 1920s. But while we’ll probably never know the truth, there is a chance they all discovered it at the same time. Whatever the truth is, the cheeseburger became a popular staple in fast food chains for the next 100 years.
The Perfect Cheeseburger
Unsurprisingly, the cheese plays an important role in creating the perfect cheeseburger. Processed cheese is often used, and while this is usually a poor substitute in other dishes, it works perfectly in a cheeseburger. The heat of the burger molds it into a half-melted, half-rigid form, maintaining enough of its shape to still have bite and flavor. When real cheese is used, it tends to melt, burn or remain uncooked.
Relish is another essential ingredient. It should provide an element of spice and moisture, cutting through any lingering dryness and bringing out the flavors. The best buns tend to be brioche buns. These are sweeter, softer and denser. If a bun is too dry, it’s like biting through a stale cookie and it just doesn’t work. The bun should be soft enough to press flat without damaging the structure, or lightly toasted to add an extra caramelised flavor.
