Do you fancy yourself as a breakfast chef? Do you want to make customers’ day cooking up stacks of delicious pancakes, serving eggs and bacon, and making cups of coffee? The IHOP careers could be just what you need. And that’s not sarcasm, because while it might sound depressing to some, that sort of job is just what many aspiring chefs and trainee chefs want to do. It’s a great job to get experience working in a busy kitchen for demanding customers, and the pay isn’t too bad either.
There is much more to IHOP careers than working as a chef. There are more roles, and while they all don’t pay well, there are still many benefits. That’s what we will discuss here on this IHOP careers page, giving you all the reason you need to grab an application form and apply to work for IHOP today.
IHOP careers are in high demand. As we’ll discuss shortly, they don’t pay a lot of money for servers. They won’t make the minimum wage that they could get at fast food chains like Jimmy John’s, Whataburger and McDonalds. However, those restaurants don’t generate a lot of money in tips, while IHOP does.
So, don’t dismiss it just yet because we’re about to give some major reasons why you would want to seriously consider IHOP careers.
Okay, so we say it a lot, but it’s worth mentioning again: the best thing about chains like this is that they hire their managers from within. They want people who know and love the brand, employees who have a proven track record. So, if you don’t have the skills or qualifications to gain instant access to a job elsewhere, then get in from the ground level with IHOP careers and then work your way from the bottom to the top.
It’s not just about to possibility of promotion either. There are also decent wages to be had here (discussed below) and there are a few other benefits to IHOP careers as well. These benefits are enjoyed by over 30,000 IHOP employees across the United States, a number that continues to grow as more and more franchises are added to the chain every single month.
One of the best things about working for a chain like IHOP is that there is always room for improvement. There is no end to the promotions that you can get here and not just within IHOP either. If you have the experience as a cook or a server then you can work in similar chains, as that experience is incredibly valuable to the fast food sector.
That’s actually the best thing about working in this sector in general. It’s the fact that you don’t need qualifications or any noticeable skills in order to get an entry level job, but if you work hard and are dedicated to the job in hand, then you can move up the ladder. There really is no end to the number of rungs you can climb on the career ladder when you do this. The majority of managers in fast food chains began by working a servers, cooks and cashiers. The same applies for supervisors, store managers, franchise managers and other high responsibility and high paying roles.
In fact, many people who own franchises or work in the board room of big chains got themselves noticed by working entry levels jobs in the same company. The current CEO of the parent company that owns Cinnabon once worked as a server for one of their brands.
Are IHOP Hiring?
IHOP are always hiring. There are so many locations so IHOP careers are also open for anyone looking to step into them. You may not even need to travel outside of your local town or city, because there are often multiple locations clustered around major cities and big towns. Restaurant careers nearly always have a high staff turnover as well, which stems from the fact that many people see them as temporary positions as opposed to full-time careers.
So, if a manager has told you that they are not hiring, then leave your CV with them and let them know you will wait. If there is truly nothing available in that location at that time, then it could be matter of weeks or even days before something does become available.
If you’re struggling then you can check with our other fast food careers pages, covering everything from McDonalds and Taco Bell, which pay minimum wage, to CostCo and In-n-Out Burger, which are devoted to paying a living wage or as close as they can get to it.
Does IHOP Drug Test?
IHOP is a franchise, which means that not all locations will have the same interview process and will go through the same protocols. However, we have done our research, we have asked around and from what we can gather IHOP do not drug test in most cases. There are exceptions to this and you may be asked to pass a drug test if you are promoted to a higher paying and higher responsibility role. But as a server, a cook or a cashier, you are unlikely to be asked to submit a drug test.
Salary: How Much Does IHOP Pay
IHOP is one of the many American restaurant chains that pays its servers a lot less than minimum wage, knowing that they stand to make much more than that in tips. Of course, you probably won’t get as many tips as you would at higher end chains like Red Lobster and at places like Hooters, but you should still be able to bump up the basic wage to minimum wage and beyond.
That basic wage can range from $3 to $5.50. If you are a hostess and therefore don’t have access to a steady supply of tips, then you can expect to earn around $8 an hour, while a line cook at IHOP can earn in excess of $10 an hour. This is actually one of the higher chef wages we have discussed here on Secret Menus. Many fast food chains will only pay $8 to $9 an hour for this role and because many of them are not specialized, it is a job that will fall under the role of “Crew Member”.
So, if you fancy getting a start as a cook and taking advantage of the other IHOP careers benefits, then this is a great place to start. You can also expect to earn much more than these amounts as a supervisor, an assistant manager and manager.
You can submit job applications online and IHOP careers are no different. However, you will always stand the best chance of getting the job if you visit the location directly and hand over your CV in person. That way you can make sure they remember you; you’ll give them a chance to put a face to a name and you can show how dedicated you are.
Make sure you display confidence. Make sure you show them that you want to work there and let them know that you can start when they want and do what they ask. Once you get to the interview stage then you can use the following questions to prepare yourself. While these day not be asked during your interview, they are common questions that have been asked before and tend to be asked by most franchises:
- Why do you want to work for us?
- What experience do you have in this job position?
- What is your position on teamwork?
- Are you a good team player?
- Are you still at school or in any other education?
- What are your goals over the long haul?
- How would you turn a bad customer experience into a good one?
IHOP Franchise Details
To get yourself a franchise with the International House of Pancakes you need a lot of money, a lot of commitment and a little luck. They don’t take everyone that applies, few franchises do, but if you have the money and they believe that you can do well for their brand, then they might be willing to allow you to come onboard.
You stand a greater chance if you have more than the minimum required liquid assets. You also stand a very good chance if you have experience as a restaurant owner or manager. The location is also important. You need to find a suitable place where there is currently no IHOP and where you can prove that an IHOP would be a success.

IHOP Franchise Cost
The IHOP franchise fee is $40,000 per restaurant unit if you purchase an agreement for a number of them, and $50,000 if you purchase a single agreement. Don’t get your hopes up just yet though as you need a lot more than that to start you own IHOP franchise.
You need to invest in property, employees, stock and a number of other basics. The lowest total for all of this is just under $100,000. That’s quite a lot more than the franchise fee, but it’s still a reasonable amount if you can make it happen for that. However, this climbs to a maximum franchise investment of over $800,000.
Even this is still not too bad when you consider that you are buying into a chain that has been around for a very long time and has spent a small fortune on advertising in that time. It’s also a chain that has a turnover of over $2 billion, a share of which could be yours if you get your hands on your own IHOP franchise.
