Krispy Kreme donut shop screams family rather than corporate. Opened by Vernon Rudolph in 1937 while working for his uncle, he managed to get the store through the Great Depression. With their delicious pastries and drinks that cannot compare to corporate stores like Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks, they are known for going the extra smile with their tastes and options. They feature a variety of types that don’t skimp out on sugary goodness.
If you’re attempting to go to Krispy Kreme for healthy breakfast options, this may not be the place for you to go to. Twelve years ago, Krispy Kreme attempted to serve through sunroofs at intersections, but it was reported that it wasn’t a big hit – we wonder why! It’s possibly because it’s easier to take your food through your driver’s side window.
As mentioned, sugary goodness is what Krispy Kreme is known for, but in 2007, they attempted to shift into a more health conscious demographic by reducing the glaze throughout their products. It was reported that the less than 0.5 grams of sugar are used in all doughnut content.
Krispy Kreme History
While founded in 1933 by a single person, it was bought back from Beatrice Foods in 1982 by a group of franchisees. In February of 2015, they opened their 1,000th store in Kansas City, Kansas.
They also serve in the following areas:
- Dominican Republic
And many more regions, despite only have 4,300 employees divided amongst 1,000 locations.
We mentioned that Vernon Rudolph worked for his uncle, who went by the name Ishmael Armstrong. Ishmael’s small store also sold very popular donuts. Vernon’s Krispy Kreme donuts flourished off of his inspirational uncle, who may have found his own inspiration from a Ohio River cook that went by the name of Joseph LeBeouf. LeBeouf was famous for his distinct and iconic donuts in the area that were fluffy and full of sugar.
Vernon’s first location for Krispy Kreme was in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. How did he choose this location? Simple: His favorite cigarette company, Camel Cigarettes, was headquartered in this city as well. While he sold his donuts individually to people, he mainly sold to convenience stores. We wonder if we got inspiration from his favorite cigarette corporation.

Krispy Kreme Secret Menu
After our search, we found that there aren’t many, if any, sites reporting on a Krispy Kreme secret menu; although, we can’t blame them, as Krispy Kreme is the least from stingy on their donut selection list. They offer a variety for each season for all types of donut lovers.
There is a lot of talk about secret ingredients and the speculation of them, though. What does make their donuts so great if they use less sugar now?
Krispy Kreme Menu Prices
Krispy Kreme has pretty solid prices and not much of a difference per kind you buy.
For a 1 piece (a single glazed donut), it is $0.99. For a dozen of the glazed donuts, you’re going to pay $7.99. If you’re looking for variety such as the sprinkled chocolate donuts, you’re going to pay $1.09 per donut and $8.99 per dozen of assorted types of donuts. If you want something more festive in their donut category, you’re going to pay $1.29 per donut and for a dozen of specialty donuts, you’re going to pay $11.39. This is a bit pricy as Dunkin Donuts offers a way cheaper selection, but Krispy Kreme offers more variety and better tasting donuts.
Their coffees of small, medium and large sizes range from $1.59 to $3.49, however, their brew box chimes in at 96 ounces and $11.99. This is a great way to wake up your coworkers!

Krispy Kreme Store Hours
Now that you’ve heard of the deliciousness Krispy Kreme has to offer and how it came to be, you’re probably wondering their store hours! When locating the store closest to you, you can see the hours for the location you have chosen, as they can be different than general times posted.
Some locations operate from 6:00am to 10:00-11:00pm, depending on the day of the week and the drive-thru operates until midnight. However, some customers are picky and use the locator to decide where the “Hot Light” is on or off.
If you’ve never been to a Krispy Kreme, a Hot Light signifies when donuts have been pulled freshly out of the oven for customers. It’s pretty cool that the donut chain has an option to choose when you go based on if your donuts are warm or not. For those who aren’t a fan of DD’s “sitting out all day” donuts, Krispy Kreme may be the restaurant for you!
