Freshly is a meal delivery service that has been gradually expanding across the United States over the last few years. In this Freshly review we’ll test this service out, asking questions of their prices, their recipes, their delivery, their customer service and more.
There is no doubt about it, Freshly hold a prominent position in this industry. They might not be the largest, but for a service that has yet to spread nationwide (as of 2017) they have an unrivaled customer-base. A lot of that is down to their aggressive marketing tactics, most of which have been focused on social media.
The question is, do Freshly deserve their position near the top? Is this service all it promises to be? We’ll find out in our Freshly review.
To test the Freshly service we approached it like any other customer would. We signed up, we ordered a few boxes and we took our time. Before we get into the meat of our review though, let’s look at some background information on this company:
- They describe themselves as, “Your own personal chef”.
- They prep, cook and then ship ready-to-eat meals.
- Their headquarters are in New York, but their kitchens are in Arizona.
- They can be reached from Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm PST, on the following number: 1-844-373-7459.
Freshly Meal Options
Meal delivery services are a great way to eat healthier, and to add more nutritious meals to your diet. But if you’re not really adept at cooking, or if you’re not interested in getting busy in the kitchen, then they can become frustrating. Freshly, however, doesn’t require you to prepare or cook anything.
Like Graze, who focus on healthy snacks, all Freshly meals are sent ready-to-eat. All meal delivery services offer convenience, but some are a little more convenient than others, and Freshly are up there with the best of them.
Not only is there no prepping or cooking involved, but there is a wide selection of meals to choose from. You can choose 4, 6, 9 or 12 meals per week, paying less the more you purchase, but with all meals coming in one delivery.
Freshly meals are by no means “low-fat”, and we like that. The emphasis here is on quality ingredients and fresh dishes. They use a liberal amount of healthy fats, including nuts and olive oil, and many of their dishes are packed with protein. In fact, this is one of the main features of Freshly, who pride themselves on being “Pro Protein”.
As a result, Freshly is popular with athletes and bodybuilders, people who might not necessarily have the time to cook, but need to eat nutritious, protein-packed meals every day.
You can find nutrition information for your Freshly meals on their website. They have detailed information on each dish.
Is Freshly Vegetarian, Vegan and Gluten-Free?
Freshly have options for many diets and needs. In fact, they are one of the better meal delivery services in this regard, especially if you’re looking for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free meals. A few of these have been a bit hit-and-miss in terms of taste. But that’s always the case. There will be meals you’ll love, there will be meals you hate. The trick is to stick with the ones you enjoy and make sure that you tell Freshly to keep them coming
Freshly prices are very reasonable. They are comparable to Hello Fresh and Blue Apron. The difference is that Freshly send you pre-cooked meals, whereas the aforementioned services send you everything you need to cook meals yourself. This makes Freshly look like a better deal, but in truth the meals are a little bigger with Hello Fresh and Blue Apron, and if you were to break Freshly meals down by ingredients, what you’d get would be worth considerably less.
The prices are subject to change, but if you want to order 4 meals per week then you need to stump up $12,50 per meal. If you opt for 12, you’ll pay just $8.99. In terms of value, $12.50 is a little over-the-top. However, $8.99 begins to look a little more realistic, especially when you consider you’re benefiting from the convenience of having someone else cook and send you a nutritious meal.
Freshly Coupons and Promo Codes
At any given time there are new customer promotions available on Freshly. We actually signed up through one of these ourselves, getting our first meal 50% off. As it happens, the code we used is no longer available, but there are others out there.
We would recommend taking a look around and not joining until you have a code that works. There are a lot of codes out there that don’t work, offering everything from a free meal to a small discount. However, it’s worth it just to keep trying. You’ll find one eventually.
Freshly Delivery: Plain Sailing or Problems?
Most Freshly reviews out there are positive. But the negative ones that do exist tend to concern their delivery. We have experienced this a little bit ourselves. In one case, our box was delayed by a day. This wasn’t much of a problem and we still got the food we had ordered the next day. However, in this time the system had ticked over and we had been charged for another week.
As it happens, we were going to remain with them for at least another week anyway. But if that hadn’t been the case, then we can imagine that this could have caused problems. After all, you want to see what’s in your delivery before you agree to another, and that applies whether it’s your first or tenth.
We’re not the only ones to have had this issue. However, Freshly tend to be very accommodating when these things happen. So, if you find yourself in a similar situation and you don’t want to continue your subscription, just give them a ring and let them know.
Where do Freshly Deliver?
Freshly’s reach is expanding all of the time. In fact, many reviews currently quote them as delivering to just a dozen or fewer states. Their goal is to cover the entire country and it surely won’t be long before they do that. But as of 2017, they are roughly halfway there.
If your state is on the list below then you should be able to receive a Freshly delivery. However, there are some exceptions for certain zip-codes. Basically, Freshly will deliver anywhere that can receive a box sent from their Arizona kitchens within 2 days. If they are to expand, it will probably be with the assistance of another kitchen in another location.
For now, you can signup and receive their meals if you reside in the following states:
- Alabama (AL)
- Arkansas (AR)
- Arizona (AZ)
- California (CA)
- Colorado (CO)
- Florida (FL)
- Georgia (GA)
- Idaho (ID)
- Illinois (IL)
- Indiana (IN)
- Iowa (IA)
- Kansas (KS)
- Kentucky (KY)
- Louisiana (LA)
- Mississippi (MS)
- Missouri (MO)
- Nebraska (NE)
- Nevada (NV)
- New Mexico (NM)
- Oklahoma (OK)
- Oregon (OR)
- South Carolina (SC)
- South Dakota (SD)
- Tennessee (TN)
- Texas (TX)
- Utah (UT)
- Washington (WA)
- Wisconsin (WI)

Freshly Review: Our Thoughts
Overall our Freshly experience was positive, which means our Freshly review comes to a decent 8/10!.
It could be better of course, and there are a few reasons behind that. Firstly, there are still some issues that need to be worked out on the technical side of things. Their customer support staff is very professional, but it seems to be a little overworked in dealing with these issues. The prices are also quite high when ordering just a few meals, especially when you consider that following preparation and cooking, you’ll get more bang for your buck with a slightly cheaper service like Hello Fresh.
On the plus side, Freshly have some fantastic meals, they are very healthy and there are options for all diets. In terms of meal delivery services, we wouldn’t rate them as the best, but they wouldn’t be too far away. In terms of services that deliver ready-to-eat food, we would rate Freshly a close second to Graze.
Services Like Freshly
Our Freshly Review is fairly favorable. The same goes for services like Hello Fresh, Sun Basket, Blue Apron and Graze, all of which we really enjoyed. However, others haven’t enjoyed their experience of Freshly as much as we did.
If you look for “Freshly Reviews” online you’ll discover a mixed bag. On Trip Advisor, for instance, Freshly is one of the lowest scoring of all the major meal delivery companies.
Some of these issues seem to be with Freshly’s delivery and their subscription service, and most can be attributed to things that are out of their hands (technical issues, delays, etc.,) Still, these are things that shouldn’t exist and things that exist in smaller numbers on Freshly’s competitors.
On the plus side, the Freshly Review customer service is always helpful. As you can see from the aforementioned Freshly Reviews, they always respond to disgruntled customers and do their best to please them. We have also experienced something similar, after encountering a small problem and getting help more or less immediately.
We think it’s important not to let a few bad reviews put you off. It would be a different story if there were many of them, but there are not. It’s up to you to make up your mind about this service, and the only way you can do that is to signup and try them out yourself.
