Our Home Chef review provides aims to answer all of the questions that you have about this service. How much is it? Is it worth it? So, before you signup for your quick and easy meals, be sure to checkout our Home Chef review.
Home Chef was introduced to the market in 2013. It wasn’t the first to enter this sector. Far from it. But back then there were far fewer meal delivery services on the market. As a result, Home Chef has been able to cement its place in the market and is now one of the most successful out there.
Home Chef Review
There are several different types of meal delivery services, which are also known as meal-kit services. These range from services like Freshly, who cook the food in their kitchens and then send it ready-to-eat; Graze, who send you ready-to-eat snacks and treats; and Home Chef, who give you all you need to prepare a delicious meal, but require you to cook it yourself.
There are many benefits to a service like Home Chef. You get to experiment with new flavors and goods; you can improve your cooking skills; and you can eat food that is fresh, convenient and delicious.
We love fast food here on Secret Menus. That should go without saying. But while it’s completely different on the surface, there are many similarities to Home Chef and other fast food favorites. Not only is it fast, but it is convenient and it’s delicious. The difference is that you know every ingredient that your Home Chef meal contains, because you’re putting those ingredients in yourself.
Of course, there is also a substantial difference in price, and a meal from Home Chef will cost significantly more than your favorite Mexican snack from Del Taco or your favorite burger from Smashburger.
Home Chef Boxes
Home Chef boxes contain all of the ingredients you need to prepare a meal, as well as the instructions on how to use them. The ingredients are portioned, so there is no need to measure, and the recipes are very easy to follow.
You can choose from ten different dinner options, as well as breakfasts, fruit and more. Home Chef is more of a complete meal service, as opposed to one that just sends you a simple meal to enjoy for one or two days a week.
The subscription service is very simple and is considered to be one of the most straightforward in the industry. There are no binding contracts. You can choose as little or as much as you want, and you can stop at anytime.
Home Chef Meals
There are options for many different diets on Home Chef, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. Many of their meals are meat-based, so you’re not getting the complete range if you opt for the vegetarian or vegan options, but there are still plenty of recipes to choose from and there is usually something for everyone.
Some of the Home Chef meals are a little more complicated than others. It all depends on the recipe, as well as the meal option that you choose. Some of the meals, including Blue Cheese, Smoked Almond and Chive-Crusted Pork Chop, sound complicated, but merely require you to cook a pork chop, boil some carrots and make a little dressing. Other dishes, especially those created with vegetarians and vegans in mind, are a little more complicated.
Home Chef Prices
When you break Home Chef prices down to “per serving” it’s just $9.95. This means they are considerably cheaper than services like Sun Basket and Freshly, and fractionally cheaper than Hello Fresh. You can choose to order meals for 2, 4 or 6 people and you can also choose to order extras, which can cost a little less.
For instance, an extra smoothie will cost less than $5 per serving, the same price as an optional fruit basket. If you want an extra serving of the main meal, however, it’ll cost you another $9.95. Of course, if you use a Home Chef coupon then you can make a big saving on your first order, which is recommended.
Home Chef Coupons
As mentioned above, Home Chef coupons are a great way to introduce yourself to this service. There are Home Chef coupons out there that offer you as much as 50% off your first order. These are actually the biggest ones we have found, but they also seem to be the most common.
Unfortunately, these 50% Home Chef coupon codes are expiring all of the time. We tested several of them prior to writing this Home Chef review and most of them did not work. There are many Home Chef coupons that do work though, so make sure you keep trying and don’t get deterred.
There is also a referral program where you can get your friends onboard and receive a discount for each one. If you signup via a friend’s account then you might even be able to score yourself an extra saving, while also giving your friend some free cash.
Home Chef Delivery
Home Chef deliver to all of the contiguous United States. This hasn’t always been the case. They began very slowly and even after a year or so they only delivered to a handful of states. However, by late 2016 they had spread rapidly and now, in 2017, they are available nationwide. There may be some issues with certain zip codes, even in cities where they deliver, but you can double check before you signup.
All food is shipped fresh and is packed to ensure it will remain that way through the time it takes to arrive at your address. It will also remain that way for most of the day, so it’s okay if you miss the delivery. Just make sure that a neighbor picks it up or that you leave a note for it to be left somewhere.
You can request a day for the food to be delivered, with slots available from Tuesday to Friday. However, they are unable to give you an exact time.
Home Chef Reviews
For the most part, Home Chef reviews are positive. There were some issues in the beginning and there have been some issues as they have expanded. But this is to be expected. When you deliver fresh food that needs to arrive and be opened within a strict timeframe, you’re putting yourself at the mercy of the couriers, as well as the people packing and shipping the food. And when you send out millions of meals per month, there are bound to be a few hiccups.
However, for the most part Home Chef deliveries are sent and received without issue and the vast majority of their customers seem to be happy with the service. The majority of cancelled subscriptions seem to be down to price, as opposed to the quality of the food. There is also the novelty factor, which tends to wear off fairly quickly with these services. They always sound good, and the advertising makes them sound even better, but the truth is they are not for everyone.
So, be sure to read up on some Home Chef reviews if you’re still not sure. Just remember that not everyone has the same experience and that the best way to find out if this service is the right fit for you is to sign-up and get started.
